Raspberry vines are called canes. The canes can be found growing in open fields and in wooded areas. They produce tasty red berries that develop about mid- summer. The brries are a juicy treat for the woodland inhabitants and humans as well. They also provide a quick escape route for small mammals in danger of becoming a larger mammals dinner! The plant can grow to four or five feet tall and are very supple. Although the canes appear to stand alone the grouping is considered a bush. Unattended, wild raspberry bushes grow very close together forming a dense, prickly thicket.
While it's true that in a good year some of them do produce delicious small raspberries, they can also be a nuisance on a walk. They have very, very small prickers up and down their redish brown cane. If you try to pass through a patch of them they will grab on to your clothes and skin and not let go without a fight. Don't worry, I "de-pricker" the canes to work with them so there will be no chance of your artwork turning against you in a prickly attack! |
