Moss is one of those hardy plants which has survived and thrived throughout the ages.It is said to be one of the earth's first green plants. Moss has no vascular root, stem or leaf system to carry its nutrition throughout the plant so it inhabits moist areas to sustain its nutritional needs. Moss is a great survivalist property as it is both eatable and has medicinal uses (always learn your plants before use). There are many thousands of moss varieties to be found around the world. My primary source for moss is "Outlaw Moss", a term I have coined to describe moss that nobody wants around. Outlaw Moss grows on and in undesirable, unplanned locations like; roofs and concrete, stone, brick or wood porches as well as locations that are not permanent like; old tires, discarded tin, old boards and glass. It is treated like a weed and unless salvaged by a moss lover it is destroyed. When I use woodland mosses I am very careful to choose areas where there is an abundant patch and to remove only a tiny section.
Whether photographing, placing in a live arrangement or incorporating dried moss in a work of art, moss is beautiful and has become one of my favorite plants!
